A Cheap Place to Ski Down Under

In a recent article in the Sydney morning herald Australian ski resorts were named as the most expensive places to ski in the world. The average Australian lift pass costs around $110 a day, around $20-30 more than those in Vail, Whistler, Aspen and Banff,  and not to mention the skiing conditions in Australia do not come close to those in internationally renowned resorts.  Australian’s looking for a cheaper ski holiday would be surprised to hear that a trip across the ditch to New Zealand is the answer. Last year my friends and I wanted to drive down to Thredbo for a week, rent a lodge and enjoy all that comes with a week in a ski village. However the accommodation alone would cost us each over $1000. We decided to go to a travel agent to see what other option we had. The travel agent suggested we head to New Zealand to ski. We reminded her that we wanted to save money, not spend more. We soon found out that a week’s trip to Queenstown would cost less than just the accommodation would cost in Thredbo. This included: Air fares, car-hire, accommodation at the Hyatt, a week’s gear hire and a 5 day pass which can be used on any of the ski resorts in Queenstown.  Not to mention the skiing in New Zealand is widely considered as being much better than that found in Aus.
